9.21.25 -First Baptist Church 186th Birthday

Day 1 – Until He Comes

Scripture: “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” — 1 Corinthians 11:26

Devotional Thought:

For nearly two centuries, believers in this church have gathered around the Lord’s Table, remembering Christ’s sacrifice. That little word “until” points us forward — our faith is not just about what Jesus did in the past, but also about what He will do in the future. We live in the tension of remembering and anticipating. Each communion service is a declaration that we believe Jesus is coming again. And when He does, remembrance will give way to celebration at the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Life Application:

This week, reflect on how your daily choices show that you are living in expectation of Christ’s return. Are you living with eternity in mind?

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for giving Your life for me. Help me to remember Your sacrifice with gratitude and live each day in anticipation of Your return. Keep my heart ready for the day when faith becomes sight. Amen.

Day 2 – By Faith

Scripture: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” — Hebrews 11:1

Devotional Thought:

From Abel to Abraham, Moses to David, the people of God have always been marked by faith. This church too was planted “by faith” — ordinary men and women stepping out to follow God’s call in their generation. Faith looks beyond present circumstances and trusts in God’s promises, even when they seem far off. Like the thief on the cross who trusted Jesus with his eternity, faith is not about what we can do, but about who we trust.

Life Application:

What step of faith is God asking you to take right now? It might be a small act of obedience or a big leap of trust. Either way, faith is choosing to believe that God will be faithful.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the faithful men and women who have gone before me. Strengthen my faith today. Help me to trust You in both the small and the great decisions of life. Amen.

Day 3 – Our Confidence

Scripture: “Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves… but our competence comes from God.” — 2 Corinthians 3:4-5

Devotional Thought:

This church’s legacy is not built on money, buildings, or human ability — it is built on Christ alone. The rich man in Jesus’ parable put his confidence in wealth, but Lazarus put his hope in the Lord. True confidence comes from knowing who we belong to, not what we possess. We cannot take earthly treasures with us, but we can invest in eternal things: relationships, service, and the spread of the gospel.

Life Application:

Examine your heart — where is your confidence today? In your bank account, your skills, or your Savior? Choose to place your trust in Christ alone.

Prayer:

Lord, forgive me for the times I place my confidence in myself or my possessions. Teach me to rest in Your sufficiency and to invest in what truly matters. Amen.

Day 4 – No Excuses

Scripture: “But they all alike began to make excuses…” — Luke 14:18

Devotional Thought:

Jesus told a parable about people invited to a banquet who refused to come because they were too busy. Sadly, many today make similar excuses about following Christ or committing to His church. For nearly two centuries, this congregation has faithfully opened its doors, but the invitation is only effective if it is accepted. God still calls His people to set aside excuses and come to the feast He has prepared.

Life Application:

Ask yourself honestly: what excuses keep me from giving Christ my best? Lay those excuses down and accept His invitation fully.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for inviting me to Your banquet of grace. Remove from me the excuses that keep me from wholehearted devotion to You. Help me to make time for what matters most. Amen.

Day 5 – A God-Honoring Legacy

Scripture: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Devotional Thought:

Each generation is called to preserve and pass on the faith. Our church family has faced trials, sacrifices, and seasons of change, but always with the hope of leaving a Christ-centered legacy. The old has gone, the new has come — and God is still at work in us. Our responsibility now is to carry the torch of faith forward, inviting others to the heavenly banquet and ensuring that this community continues to shine for Christ.

Life Application:

Think of one way you can help strengthen and preserve the ministry of your church — through prayer, service, giving, or inviting others. Be intentional about leaving a spiritual legacy.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the faithful legacy of this church. Help me do my part in preserving and strengthening it for future generations. May my life point others to Christ, and may our fellowship always bring You glory. Amen.
