12.21.25 – Love: The 4th Sunday of Advent

Day 1 — What Kind of Love Is This?

📖 Scripture: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son…” — John 3:16

💭 Devotional Thought:  When Jesus says that God “loved the world,” He is not describing a casual affection or a fleeting emotion. We often use the word love for everything—from pizza to pets to people—yet we instinctively know those loves are not the same. Scripture helps us by clarifying what kind of love God has for us. The love spoken of in John 3:16 is agape love: a deliberate, sacrificial choice. God did not love us because we were lovable. He loved us because it is His nature to do so.

🪞 Reflection:  How has using one word for many kinds of love shaped your understanding of God’s love? Do you ever project human love limitations onto Him?

🙏 Prayer:  Father, help me understand Your love as You intend it—not as I define it. Teach me to receive Your agape love with humility and gratitude. Amen.

Day 2 — The Love That Chooses

📖 Scripture: “Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God…” — 1 John 4:7–8

💭 Devotional Thought:  The Bible describes several kinds of love—friendship (philo), family (storge), romance (eros)—but agape stands apart. Agape is not driven by emotion, attraction, or familiarity. It is a direction of the will. When Scripture says “God is love,” it is revealing that God consistently chooses what is best for others, even at great cost to Himself. And as recipients of that love, we are called to reflect it.

🪞 Reflection:  Who in your life is difficult to love emotionally, yet still called to be loved intentionally?

🙏 Prayer:  Lord, align my will with Yours. Help me love others not just when it feels easy, but when it reflects You. Amen.

Day 3 — Love That Gives First

📖 Scripture: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son…” — 1 John 4:9–10

💭 Devotional Thought:  The greatest gift ever given wasn’t wrapped in paper or placed under a tree. It was placed in a manger and later lifted on a cross. God did not wait for us to love Him first. He initiated love through sacrifice. Jesus lived sinlessly, healed generously, forgave freely, and gave Himself fully—not because we deserved it, but because God loved us.

🪞 Reflection:  Do you struggle to believe God loves you as you are, or do you feel you must earn it?

🙏 Prayer:  Thank You, God, for loving me first. Help me rest in the truth that Your love is a gift, not a reward. Amen.

Day 4 — Love Made Visible

📖 Scripture: “If God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” — 1 John 4:11–12

💭 Devotional Thought:  Love for God is not measured by words alone but by how it overflows into our relationships. As the old song humorously reminds us, you cannot truly love God while withholding love, mercy, or compassion from your neighbor. Jesus defined “neighbor” not by proximity but by opportunity—whoever God places in your path. When we agape one another, God’s love is made complete in us.

🪞 Reflection:  Where might God be calling you to demonstrate love rather than merely speak about it?

🙏 Prayer:  God, open my eyes to the neighbors You place before me each day. Let my love be seen, not just heard. Amen.

Day 5 — Loved First, Sent Forward

📖 Scripture: “We love because He first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

💭 Devotional Thought:  God’s love does not end with us—it moves through us. By His Spirit, we abide in Him, confess Christ as Savior, and live as witnesses of His love. Having been forgiven much, we are called to forgive much. Agape love flows back to God through obedience and outward to others through grace-filled living.

🪞 Reflection:  How can you intentionally reflect God’s agape love this week—in forgiveness, mercy, or service?

🙏 Prayer:  Lord, thank You for loving me first. Let Your love shape my words, actions, and heart so that others may see You through me. Amen.
