ECCLESIASTES 6-7

Bible Study Notes Rev. Betsy Perkins

Consider What God Has Done

A Gift of God (Ecclesiastes 5:18 – 6:2):

  • Watch the video “The End of Wisdom” in “The Bible Jesus Read” series by Philip Yancey (RightNowMedia)
  • What is the gift of God that the Teacher has observed?
  • Why could this gift weigh heavily on some people? What is needed so God’s gift is not wasted and made meaningless?
  • Read Agur’s prayer in Proverbs 30:7-9. What does he ask of God?
  • Have you received this gift from God? Has our nation received it?

Wise Words   (Proverbs 22:1-12):

  • Read these proverbs one verse at a time and consider how they apply to life today. What is the wisdom each one teaches?

Consider What God Has Done  (Ecclesiastes 7:13-22):

  • What insights does the Teacher share in verses 13-14? Do you agree?
  • In the light of the contradictions and paradoxes of life, what advice does the Teacher give in verses 15-18?
  • How is the Teacher’s advice in verse 17 contradicted by Jesus in Matthew 5:6?
  • What is the paradoxical truth the Teacher lifts up in verses 19-20?
  • Why does the Teacher advise us not to pay too much attention to what people say?
  • What quality would we see in the life and character of someone who practices this advice?

In light of this passage and our discussion, what one truth about God and about yourself stand out as something to “take to heart” this week?

Are there steps you will take, by God’s grace, to more fully apply it to your life?
