Walking in the Light โ 5 Day Devotional
Day 1 โ The Trap and the Missing Man
๐ Scripture: Gospel of John 8:2โ6a
๐ญ Devotional Thought: The religious leaders thought they had Jesus cornered. If He dismissed the charge, He would appear to defy the Law of Moses. If He upheld it, He would challenge Roman authority. They were not seeking righteousness; they were seeking leverage.
The Law in Book of Leviticus 20:10 clearly states that both the man and the woman caught in adultery were to be put to death. Yet only the woman was dragged before Jesus. Where was the man? How was she โcaught in the actโ? Something about the scene is deeply unjust.
๐ช Reflection: Is there an area in your life where you are more eager to point out someone elseโs sin than to confront your own?
๐ Prayer: Lord, search my heart. Remove any hypocrisy in me. Help me to love truth more than I love being right. Give me a heart that seeks restoration, not condemnation. Amen.
Day 2 โ Writing in the Dust
๐ Scripture: Gospel of John 8:6bโ8, 1st John 1:5โ9
๐ญ Devotional Thought: Jesus bends down and writes in the dust. What did He write? Names? The Ten Commandments? Their private sins? Scripture doesnโt say, and perhaps that is intentional. What we do know is this: one by one, the accusers walk away. The Light quietly exposes what darkness tries to hide.
Most of us prefer darkness when it comes to our failures. Like children playing hide and seek, we would rather no one use a flashlight. Yet when Jesus holds the light, our sins are safe in nail-pierced hands. He exposes not to shame, but to save.
๐ช Reflection: What are you tempted to keep hidden from God? What would it look like to step honestly into His light today?
๐ Prayer: Jesus, shine Your light into the corners of my heart. Reveal what needs to change, and give me courage to walk in truth. Thank You that Your light brings grace, not destruction. Amen.
Day 3 โ Neither Do I Condemn You
๐ Scripture: Gospel of John 8:9โ11
๐ญ Devotional Thought: When the crowd disappears, only Jesus and the woman remain. โNeither do I condemn you,โ He says. But He does not stop there: โGo and sin no more.โ Grace and truth meet in one sentence. Like a good Father, He doesnโt love us less in the mudโbut He will not leave us there either.
Jesus consistently cared more about the condition of the heart than outward appearances. When He forgave the paralytic before healing him, He demonstrated that soul restoration matters most.
๐ช Reflection: Have you truly received Christโs forgiveness? And are you allowing His grace to transform the way you live?
๐ Prayer: Father, thank You that You do not condemn me in Christ. Help me not to abuse Your mercy. Give me strength to leave behind what dishonors You and to walk in newness of life. Amen.
Day 4 โ Gentle with the Broken, Firm with the Proud
๐ Scripture: Gospel of Matthew 11:28โ30; 23:5โ7, 13โ15, 27โ28
๐ญ Devotional Thought: To the weary, Jesus says, โCome to Me.โ To the burdened, He offers rest. To the broken, He is gentle and humble in heart. But to the self-righteous, He speaks with sobering clarity. The harshest words in Scripture are not directed at sinners desperate for mercyโthey are directed at religious leaders who should have known better.
Judgment begins with the household of God. Those who claim to represent Him are called to reflect His character.
๐ช Reflection: Are you more like the woman in need of mercyโor the accusers needing humility? Where might pride be hiding in your spiritual life?
๐ Prayer: Lord, keep me humble. Make me gentle with the broken and honest with myself. Help me reflect Your heart in the way I treat others. Amen.
Day 5 โ Walking in the Light of Life
๐ Scripture: Gospel of John 8:12; 1:4โ5; 3:19โ21
๐ญ Devotional Thought: Right after this encounter, Jesus declares, โI am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.โ
From the opening chapter of John, we are told that in Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. People love darkness because it hides their deeds. But those who live by the truth come into the light.
Walking in the light means honesty, repentance & trusting that when Jesus exposes sin, He does so to redeem, not to ruin. Your sins are safest in His hands.
๐ช Reflection: Are you ready to walk in the Light of Christ? Is there a step of repentance or obedience God is calling you to take today so you can walk more fully in His light?
๐ Prayer: Jesus, Light of the world, lead me out of darkness. I surrender what Iโve been hiding. Help me follow You faithfully and reflect Your light to others. Amen.
